BC Aggregate Specifications Aggregate Stability And Highway Internal Drainage

In 1984, new surfacing, base and sub-base specifications were incorporated into the General Specifications for Highway Construction (BC Ministry of Transportation). These specifications describe high fines surfacing, well graded, intermediate and open graded aggregate gradations. These aggregate gradations, except for high fines surfacing, are designed primarily to minimize water related strength loss. Optimal utilization of these gradations requires an understanding of stability and drainage fundamentals. Consequently this report is designed as a reference manual for engineers and technicians involved in pavement design.

It summarizes hydrologic processes or conditons which can adversely affect the pavement structure. The classification of aggregate gradations presently specified by the Ministry is outlined. The role of these gradations as base and sub-base components of the highway prism is defined.
