Ceiling joists are required to support ceiling finishes when roof trusses are not used or when the ceiling finish is attached to the underside of rafters. These joists are laid out and framed in a similar manner to floor joists; the main difference being that additional joists are not required at the partition locations. Backing is nailed to the top of the cap plate of the partition running parallel to the ceiling joists to provide support for the ceiling finish.
